Exhibition Design: how to transform a space into an experience

Every exhibition begins with a theme or concept worth telling. Our job is to translate that vision into a concrete project.
This means choosing the narrative thread that will guide the exhibition, carefully evaluating the most suitable location and defining every detail together: from the target audience to opening hours, and of course, the budget.
Communication is no less important: posters, promotional materials and the key image of the exhibition are the tools that bring people through the doors of the venue.
Every two years, Vicenza comes alive with Illustri Festival, an event that fills the city with exhibitions, activities and initiatives dedicated to illustration.
In the latest edition, we were involved in the exhibition design, especially the major show inside the Basilica Palladiana.
Here we designed and set up an exhibition journey that narrated the three stages of an artist’s growth: from emerging illustrators, to established professionals, and finally to masters.
The theme was complexity and, to interpret it, we developed a scenographic solution with wooden frames and knotted ropes arranged in different ways. The result was a dynamic installation, perfectly in tune with the colors of the illustrations and capable of conveying the essence of each section of the exhibition.

Exhibition design organization: creating a narrative path
Once the project is defined, we move to the soul of exhibition design: the space itself. Here, attention to detail makes all the difference. Artworks need to be told through a clear and engaging narrative flow.
This can be chronological, thematic or based on other criteria, but it must guide visitors naturally.
Lighting becomes a true ally, enhancing shapes and colors without disturbing them. Panels and captions are not mere “labels”, but small tools that enrich the experience.
And of course, security is crucial, especially for fragile or highly valuable works.
The goal is always to create a harmonious and functional environment, where the comfort of the public goes hand in hand with the preservation of the artworks.
A recent example of our work is the exhibition “Pompeo Pianezzola (1925–2012)”, dedicated to the centenary of the artist and developed in collaboration with Studio Albanese.
A project inspired by the idea of measured and poetic frugality, which we translated into a tailor-made exhibition design, enhancing both material and space with balance and elegance.
For us at Manaly, it was the opportunity to give tangible form to a refined curatorial vision, turning it into an accessible and evocative experience for visitors.

After so much preparation in exhibition design, the most exciting moment arrives: the opening. It is when the exhibition stops being just a project and becomes a living event, full of people, voices and emotions.
